Exposing the Hidden Threat: TeraBox and the Dark Side of Free Cloud Storage

Exposing the Hidden Threat: TeraBox and the Dark Side of Free Cloud Storage

By Red Side India

Free cloud storage apps like TeraBox have become wildly popular in India, offering users 1TB of storage for free. But behind the generous offer, is there a darker story unfolding — one that threatens your privacy and digital identity?

What We Discovered

Our team at Red Side India conducted a technical audit of the TeraBox application. What we found was concerning:

  • Excessive permissions requested on Android devices
  • Background data transfers to servers outside India
  • Lack of clear consent mechanisms for sensitive data usage
  • Signs of user profiling and behavioral tracking

Despite millions of downloads, users are mostly unaware of how their data is being handled. Worse, our findings suggest possible violations of Google Play's Developer Policy and India’s IT Act.

Why This Matters

With increasing incidents of identity theft and data abuse, your phone number, identity documents, or even photo gallery can be used to commit fraud — without your knowledge.

What We Did

We have officially submitted:

  • A whistleblower report to relevant authorities
  • A policy violation complaint to Google Play
  • A legal notice through Google’s identity protection form

How You Can Protect Yourself

  • Check what permissions apps are using (Settings > Apps > Permissions)
  • Avoid uploading sensitive documents or media to unknown cloud apps
  • Use verified Indian cloud storage providers or encrypted alternatives
  • Stay informed — follow us for updates and awareness
